UAE announces grace period for violators

grace period

A grace period in the UAE refers to a period of time given to residents or visitors after the expiration of their visas or legal residency to regularize their status without facing penalties or fines. Visitors are usually given a grace period ranging from 10 to 30 days after the expiration of their visas, while residents are given a grace period of up to 30 days after the expiration of their residency visa to renew it or leave the country.

UAE gives violators a two-month grace period

The UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship has announced that it will grant a two-month grace period for residency violators to exempt them from paying fines and other penalties. The grace period will start from September 1, 2024, and will exempt violators from any financial penalties under the Federal Law on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners. Authorities will take all necessary measures to implement this initiative, including canceling fines and legal consequences, allowing violators to either regularize their status or easily leave the country.

In a statement, the authority said that the decision aims to give violators a new opportunity to legalize their status, obtain legal residency as well as the unified number in accordance with the law, as a gesture that reflects the values of mercy and tolerance on which the UAE is based.

Grace period after canceling residency in the UAE

After canceling residency in the UAE, residents are granted a grace period of 30 days from the date of cancellation. During this period, residents can stay in the UAE to settle their affairs such as looking for a new job, moving to another sponsor, or leaving the country without incurring fines.

If a resident does not leave or adjust their legal status within the grace period, they are subject to financial penalties for each day of illegal stay in the country.

UAE Residence Visa Rules

The validity of UAE residence visas may vary depending on the type and sponsor. There is the UAE Green Visa, Golden Visa, and sponsorship visa that is valid for 1 to 3 years, while the self-sponsorship visa can be used for up to 5 or 10 years. Fines are imposed on those who overstay their visas or renew their visas before expiration.
